British. Studied Philosophy through PhD level, with a focus on Kant's theories and aesthetic theories more generally. Practiced art throughout my 20's, but for various reasons stopped practicing art for around a decade. Began painting and drawing again in the autumn of 2023, with a clearer idea and vision of what I want to achieve. Self taught artist, influenced by the golden age of British art (18th C through to early 19th C), the Northern Renaissance, Early - Mid Modernism and British Neo- Romanticism. Most works displayed on this site are recent works but there are some of my older works amongst them.

At the minute mostly thinking about the symbolic aspect of art, in the sense of the transcendent/profane distinction. If post-modern (Contemporary) art leaned into 'the subtext' and 'trying to make a statement' then its function was largely political/ideological. The ideological import of this was obvious and something got lost in this 'post-modern' shift. I am more interested in the universal messaging of art (drawing and painting) and the transcendental aspect that was sacrificed in Contemporary Art, which I believe to be a dead or dying paradigm. The basic premise of the 'spiritual in art' is not new and has been explored by the likes of Maurice Denis and Kandinsky, and in examine art it becomes obvious there is a profane/spiritual interplay that is an essential character of whatever is called 'art' throughout the ages. I will write more here at some point, but for now i will let my work speak for itself in terms of what i am trying to achieve. Interested in working with people that appreciate the spiritual, poetic and esoteric nature of art and illustration. If you need to contact me please write to me at: sdavidaa@yahoo.com
